The Gift’s Newest Shining Stars

August 19, 2020

So far, in 2020, 14 out of 40 Gift designated facilities also hold the prestigious The Gift Shining Star designation, the highest designation within The Gift program. Birthing facilities must apply for re-designation every two years and applications are reviewed quarterly. The most recent designation cycle occurred in June and the following hospitals received the award: CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Hospital, East Jefferson General Hospital and Opelousas General Health System (OGHS). Birthing facilities are reviewed for their performance on specific maternity care practices and policies that are aligned with the evidence-based, internationally recognized Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding from the WHO/UNICEF Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative. Additionally, these facilities are assessed for their degree of participation in quality improvement activities and implementation of available patient education materials. Policy development, staff education, patient education and provision of discharge resources for breastfeeding mothers are key components of the program.
