North LA Hospital Uses QI to Increase Skin-to-skin Rates

February 22, 2019

Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport, an academic hospital, recognized the need to have an “all hands on deck” approach to increase rates of skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby, immediately after birth. As a result, the breastfeeding task force developed a special skin-to-skin task force to use a quality improvement approach to integrate this evidence-based practice.

Since the formation of a skin-to-skin task force, which includes labor and delivery, lactation and nursery staff, skin-to-skin rates for vaginal deliveries increased 16%. Congratulations to Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport for the great quality improvement work!
