In 2014, The Gift expanded its team to be able to provide more technical assistance and support to hospitals to implement evidence-based maternity care practices and improve hospital-community coordination. Meet The Gift team below!

Susie Amick, MSN, RN, IB-CLC, RLC, LCCE – Nurse Consultant

Susie Amick is a Registered Nurse (RN) with a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), as well as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). She has been a certified Lamaze Instructor and a Lactation Consultant in the New Orleans area for over 20 years, presently working at East Jefferson General Hospital (EJGH) in Metairie, LA. She has been instrumental in helping her hospital achieve Gift designation, as well as participate in the national Best Fed Beginnings Initiative, with the goal of achieving Baby-Friendly designation in 2015.   Susie served two two-year terms as a steering committee member of the Louisiana Breastfeeding Coalition. Susie has been a nurse consultant for The Gift program since 2007 and has conducted 39 training programs for hospital staff related to breastfeeding. Her family incudes her husband (a beekeeper and retired Marine), her yellow lab “Dixie” and her son and daughter-in-law who live in Metairie (with 2 Grand Girls), as well as her daughter and son-in-law who live in Atlanta (with one Grand Girl and another grandchild expected in 2015).

Marci Brewer, MPH – Breastfeeding Program Manager

Marci Brewer is the Breastfeeding Program Manager for the LA Dept. of Health and Hospitals -Office of Public Health – Bureau of Family Health. As the Breastfeeding Program Manager she coordinates The Gift, a hospital-based breastfeeding initiative and designation program, and also oversees the Louisiana Breastfeeding Coalition. In 2002, Marci received a B.Sc. in Human Nutrition, Foods and Exercise from Virginia Tech. She was awarded a Master of Public Health, with a focus in Maternal and Child Health, from Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine in 2008. Her passion for breastfeeding and maternal and child health developed when she worked in Western Samoa in their Ministry of Health, and with the WIC Program in Fairfax County, Virginia. She was the 2009 recipient of the Elizabeth A. Bennett Award for Excellence in Maternal and Child Health given by the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.

Betsy Dancisak, MPH – Program Coordinator

Betsy Dancisak is the breastfeeding program coordinator for The Gift at the Bureau of Family Health. She received her Master of Public Health in Behavioral and Community Health Sciences at LSU-HSC School of Public Health in 2014. Prior to joining the Gift team, Betsy interned at Tulane University’s Mary Amelia Women’s Center where she worked on a social media breastfeeding promotion campaign in New Orleans. She has a bachelor’s degree in Food Science from the University of Minnesota thus, she enjoys observing the ever-changing world of food. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her husband and two girls, cooking, reading, and going for walks.

Jessica Evins, BSN, RN, IBCLC – Nurse Consultant

After receiving her BSN from Louisiana College, Jessica began her career in maternal/ child nursing in 2004. She spent time in the newborn nursery and in the pediatric unit. This led to joining and eventually becoming the Executive Director of the Central Louisiana Breastfeeding Coalition, Inc.  The CLBC offered support for breastfeeding mothers through a peer counseling and workplace support program. After relocating to Baton Rouge in 2009, Jessica became an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and also a nursing mother. Jessica worked in the lactation department at the Baton Rouge General. She then joined Ochsner Medical Center Baton Rouge, where she helped create a lactation department and served as the Lead Lactation Consultant. Ochsner’s Lactation Department worked to achieve Gift Designation in 2011, receive the Gift Above and Beyond Award in 2012, and became the first Baby Friendly designated facility in the state of Louisiana in August 2014. Jessica now serves as a Nurse Consultant for the Bureau of Family Health’s Gift Program to help promote evidenced-based breastfeeding practices. Jessica was a founding member of the Louisiana Breastfeeding Coalition and is now the Chair of the Steering Committee. She resides in Prairieville with her husband and two sons.

Kelli Waller, RN, BSN, IBCLC, CCE – Nurse Consultant

Kelli Waller is from Minden, LA.  Kelli has been an RN for 9 years, working in all Mother-Baby areas, including perinatal education.  She is became an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant in 2014 and Certified Childbirth Educator in 2015. She has been married to her husband Trey for 12 years and they have 3 boys. Kelli is dedicated to educating Louisiana families about breastfeeding and promoting evidenced-based breastfeeding practices in hospitals and perinatal clinics.
